How The Impact Group is Honoring Women’s History Month

The women of IGPR hold nearly 150 years of combined professional experience

We asked each one of them what advice they would give to a young woman just beginning her career. Here is what they said.

Know your worth! Your knowledge and experience are important and can make a big impact. Be confident in what you have to contribute. Listen empathetically to others, but always trust your instincts and act ethically in each and every situation. Advocate for yourself, always!

Research, read, and interview! To have confidence, you need knowledge. Immerse yourself in learning about the digital tools required for the job and the best methods. The more you know about the job requirements, the more confident you will be going into an interview, and the more successful you will be in the job.

My advice to anyone beginning their career would be always strive to overdeliver. Never stop with “that’s good enough.” Learn to give a little bit extra.

Success in this business is the ability to juggle A LOT of things and build great relationships with clients – something women, historically, have excelled in.

Don’t be afraid of your creative side – keep embracing it. There is a place for it (and you) in the world that you may not even understand yet. Lean into your passions and keep working hard at them. Be intentional with your goals, and opportunities will come your way. Be open to understanding the way that you use your creativity. It may be different in a professional setting versus a personal one. Both are okay – and both are necessary.

The fields of marketing, communications and sales are tremendously rewarding. There is never a dull moment as the market is evolving and changing every day. Embrace the 5 P’s of marketing, communicate with sincerity and grace, and ride the highs and lows of sales with a great deal of humility. My advice is to jump in and enjoy the ride!

Though I do not come from a communications background, I’ve found engaging, meaningful work in this field! Changing fields can seem daunting, but if you follow your interests and remain open to opportunities, you can discover an exciting career path. Apply for everything that ignites your curiosity, even positions you may not think you’re perfectly qualified for. There is always room to learn and grow!

Never sell yourself short; you really are as talented as you think you are. If you doubt yourself, so will others. If you believe in yourself, they will too. Surround yourself with others that build you up, and do the same for them in return.

You will be challenged. You will be hurt. You will have highs and lows. You will find leaders, and you will find followers. The one constant throughout your professional career will be YOU. Be authentic, respectfully honest and true to the person you want to become. The doubt you feel, you can overcome. You are smart; you are worthy. You are enough.

As we celebrate the remaining days of Women’s History Month, we feel incredibly grateful for the group of communicators, marketers, writers and leaders – both women and men – at The Impact Group. We look forward to sharing our passion for schools, cities, local governments and boards of developmental disabilities with the next generation. Onward and upward!
